Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer.

Bushfire preparation

While the area is renowned for being green, and beautiful with dense forestry, Western Australia's South West is also vulnerable to prevalent bushfires in the dry summer heat.

The Gloucester Tree has been long retired now, but the gentle giant was initially used by forest rangers as a fire lookout, long before the advent of digital technology and helicopters.

As well as having a bushfire action plan, an useful way to get ready for the dry summer months is to be certain that you have an adequate amount of water storage to help protect you from the threat of fire, and a Pioneer Water Tank offers that security.

If you want to make sure your water tank could be used for the purposes of both household or property water storage, as well as fire protection, Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve.

Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions.

When the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC together with the CSIRO performed bushfire simulations on a range of water tanks, a steel Pioneer Water Tank performed best.

All other tanks tested either melted or split, leading them to forfeit important water, however, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30-minute fire front, which could well prove essential to fire fighting efforts.

Once a fire front has passed, the water in your tank can most likely still be used for non-consumptive purposes, like watering your gardens, however, it is highly advised to get your water tested as soon as possible to make sure your water is safe before using it for food preparation or drinking.

Manjimup Water Storage Challenges

While quite a few people across our dry country relish the sight of rain, shifting weather conditions, paired with modern infrastructure have led to increasing cases of stormwater runoff and flash flooding.

Thanks to the amount of rainwater that might be harvested from a roof with sufficient guttering, installing a rainwater tank can help relieve some of the stress on stormwater systems.

If a storm drops 100mm of rainfall in Manjimup in a 24-hour period, just 100 homes equipped with rainwater tanks can keep 2 million litres of water off of roads and storm drains.

The Manjimup Climate

Manjimup has a mild Mediterranean climate, with cool wet winters and warm dry summers, with an average annual rainfall of 995mm.

Manjimup's longest consecutive run of cold days was 20 days between 13 July and 1 August 1958, and its longest consecutive wet spell was 44 days between 1 July to 13 August 1946, where 374 mm of rain fell.

Timber is the town's major industry, but it has been joined by fruit and vegetable farms, dairy farms, wool, grain and vineyards. Manjimup is the leading Australian-mainland producer of black truffles

Proven to deter the growth of harmful bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water Tanks exclusive.

The natural antimicrobial qualities of silver and Sanitized ® technology are woven into the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner.

Pioneer V-Lock® tank wall profile

The Pioneer V-Lock® tank wall profile has been engineered for durability, and designed with the sole purpose of water storage in mind.

This V-Lock panel profile is designed not only for the sturdiness and durability of the tank wall itself by engineering the sheets to the ideal thickness for each panel, but also to protect the tank liner, preventing stretching and wear as the tank fills up and drains.

The design was viewed as so good, in regards to structural integrity and visual appeal, it received an Australian Design Award.

Manjimup Historical Fact

Manjimup was named after the Noongar words "Manjin" a broad-leafed edible reed, and "up" meaning meeting place, or place of. Manjimup was first settled by timber cutter Thomas Muir, who took up land near the present town site in 1856. It was declared a town in 1910, and a railway from Perth was completed in 1911.

The population expanded when Manjimup became part of the post-World War I Group Settlement Scheme. The Group Settlement Scheme was largely unsuccessful because the land was difficult to clear and many of the new settlers were not experienced farmers.

The settlers who stayed became dairy farmers, which ended during the 1930s Great Depression when the price of butterfat collapsed.
