Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer

Bushfire preparation

Despite being a stunning and green part of the country, many parts of Tasmania are struck by green drought, which means in the hot, dry summer months, plant life is dry and vulnerable to wildfires.

It is crucial in any rural setting to ensure that you are doing the best you can to protect yourself from bushfire. You can do this by making sure that you have a bushfire action plan, as well as adequate water storage for fire fighting purposes.

In order to ensure your water tank can be used for the purposes of both household or property water storage, and fire protection, Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve.

Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions

A Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competition in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in partnership with the CSIRO.

After 30 minutes of submersion in flame, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water, a vital feature for firefighting efforts, while the other tanks tested either melted or split, causing their water to be partially or fully lost.

If your water tank has been exposed to fire, it is essential to ensure that you get your water tested as soon as possible to make sure that it is safe for food preparation or drinking. The water would, however, still be suited for purposes such as watering gardens or lawns.

An Ongoing Battle with the Elements

The Launceston climate

Launceston lies in an oceanic, temperate climate region, with four distinct seasons. The summers are warm, sunny and pleasant, and the three winter months are traditionally the wettest.

These favourable conditions have led to Launceston becoming a major hub for the regional agricultural and pastoral activities, traditionally apple growing, and wool industries have flourished.

Rainwater run-off and flooding

In areas across Australia, especially rural and regional areas effected by drought, rainfall is usually a very welcomed sight, and Tasmania is no outlier in this fact.

When consistent rainfall builds up, this can lead to flooding and storm water run off, which can cause damage to property and the environment, particularly in areas where man made facilities such as roads and footpaths cause the water to be unable to soak in to the soil.

If Launceston received 100mm of rain in a 24 hour downpour, it would require just 100 homes to have water tanks to keep 2 million litres of water from entering stormwater systems and contributing to stormwater runoff and flooding damages.

The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference

Aqualiner Fresh® antimicrobial water tank liner

Proven to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water tanks exclusive.

The natural antimicrobial properties of silver and Sanitized ® technology are woven into the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner.

This is an industry leading product, made up of five engineered layers, coming together to produce the most scientifically advanced, cleanest and strongest water tank liner available today.

Pioneer V-Lock® tank wall profile

The Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile has been engineered for durability, and developed with the sole purpose of water storage in mind.

This V-Lock panel profile is designed not only for toughness and durability of the tank wall itself by engineering the sheets to the ideal thickness for each panel, but also to protect the tank liner, preventing stretching and wear as the tank fills and empties.

The design was deemed so good, in terms of structural integrity and aesthetic appeal, it won an Australian Design Award.

Australian made water tanks - Tasmanian local service

Made up of more than fifty local water tank dealers across the country, Pioneer's Dealer Direct Network means that we can provide truly local service to all Australians.

Installing water tanks in Launceston and all across Tasmania, we are proud to be partnered with Statewide Tanks Tasmania, who are able to assist with all your water storage needs.

We ensure that our dealers are of the highest quality, as we know that a water tank is only as good as the person who builds it.

Launceston Local Knowledge

Launceston fun fact

Launceston was originally called Pattersonia, after the British garrison Lt. Col. William Paterson who set up camp in what is now the townsite. Former Australian cricket captain, Ricky Ponting was born and raised in LauncThieston.

A city of many firsts, Launceston was the first Australian city to have underground sewers, and the first to be lit by hydroelectricity. It was also the first place in the southern hemisphere to observe the use of anaesthetic

Things to do in Launceston

A thriving, progressive city which has seen its population double in just the last 20 years has more things to do than we could possibly list here, but we would be remiss not to recommend a trip to Cataract Gorge, or, if you have a little more time on your hands, Cradle Mountain.
