The Grass Patch Climate

Grass Patch experiences a dry and temperate climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

The poor quality of the soil in the surrounding district made the development of farming in the area difficult and unproductive. In 1949 it was discovered that the soil in the Esperance region was deficient in certain trace elements.

The addition of these trace elements to the soil has since improved fertility and crop yields a great deal, and the region has become an important agricultural district, successfully producing wheat, barley, canola, sheep and cattle.

Grass Patch Water Storage Challenges

In a nation that is known for being as dry as Australia, it is no surprise that many people take delight at the idea of rainfall, however changing weather conditions that lead to unpredictable storms, paired with modern infrastructure like roads and footpaths can easily lead to storm water run off and flash flooding.

Thanks to the amount of rainwater that can be harvested from a roof with sufficient guttering, installing a rainwater tank can help relieve some of the stress on stormwater systems.

If we suppose the average roof in Grass Patch is 200m2, then if there were to be a weather event that deposits 150mm of rainfall, like the storms of 2007, it would only require 100 homes to have installed water tanks to keep over 3 million litres of water from becoming stormwater run off.

Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer

Bushfire Preparation

While the area is renowned for its beautiful coastlines and farmland, the Esperance Region - like much of Western Australia - is also susceptible to widespread bushfires in the dry summer heat.

An important way to prepare your home the drier summer months is to make sure that you not only have a bushfire action plan, but also that you have adequate water storage to help yourself and emergency services in the event of bushfires.

Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve in your tank, to ensure it can be used for both household water storage and fire protection.

The best performed water tank in bushfire conditions

A Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competition in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in partnership with the CSIRO.

After 30 minutes of submersion in flame, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water, a crucial feature for firefighting efforts, while the other tanks tested either melted or split, causing their water to be partially or fully lost.

While a water tank will still prove adequate for watering gardens or lawns, if it has been exposed to fire, it is highly recommended that you get the tank water tested as soon as possible to ensure that it is still safe for household use.

The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference

Aqualiner Fresh ® antimicrobial water tank liner

The Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is a Pioneer Water Tanks exclusive, the only antimicrobial tank liner available on the market today, and is proven to prevent the growth of algae and bacteria in your water tank.

The Aqualiner Fresh ® utilises Sanitized ® technology, with the antibacterial properties of silver, interwoven into the water tank liner.

The most technologically advanced, cleanest and strongest liner available on the market, this is an industry leading product, comprised of five distinct layers to protect and store your water.

Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile

Designed for durability and for the sole purpose of water storage, the Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile is also a Pioneer Water Tanks exclusive.

This V-Lock panel profile is designed not only for strength and durability of the tank wall itself by engineering the sheets to the ideal thickness for each panel, but also to protect the tank liner, preventing stretching and wear as the tank fills and empties.

The design was deemed so good, in terms of structural integrity and aesthetic appeal, it won an Australian Design Award.

Grass Patch Historical Fact

The townsite was proposed in 1910 when land in the area was being opened up, and as a watering spot for the planned Esperance to Norseman Railway, which was completed 15 years later.

Although the area was already well known as Grass Patch, locals sought a more suitable name for the town when it was gazetted in 1923. Of the three nominated, Warden was chosen.

However, objections were soon raised about this name and later the same year it was changed back to Grass Patch, and has remained since.
