Residents of Fyshwick know that they can rest assured, knowing they have the backing and support of Australia's number one big tank company.

Although many who live outside the region hold the belief that the ACT is a verdant land of plentiful rains, folks in the area know better, and are mindful of their water storage needs.

Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer.

Bushfire preparation

While the area is known for being green and wintry, the ACT actually receives quite low levels of rainfall leaving it vulnerable to widespread bushfires in the dry summer heat, and green drought throughout the year.

Smoke haze became synonymous with the 2019/2020 Australian summer, and on 1 January 2020, Canberra had the worst air quality of any major city in the world, as fires both in and outside of the territory caused widespread damage.

It is important in any country setting to ensure that you are doing the best you can to protect yourself from bushfire. You can do this by ensuring that you have a bushfire action plan, along with adequate water storage for fire fighting purposes.

Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve in your tank, to ensure it can be used for both household water storage and fire protection.

Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions.

A Pioneer Water Tank carried out better than the competition in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in collaboration with the CSIRO.

All other tanks evaluated either melted or split, causing them to shed valuable water, however the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30-minute fire front, which could prove vital to fire fighting efforts.

After a fire front has passed, the water in your tank can still be used for non-consumptive applications, like irrigating your gardens, however, it is highly recommended to get your water tested as soon as possible to make sure your water is safe before using it for food preparation or potable uses.

Fyshwick Water Storage Challenges

In a nation that is known for being as dry as Australia, it is no surprise that most people take delight at the idea of rainfall, however changing weather conditions that lead to unpredictable storms, paired with modern infrastructure like roads and footpaths can bring about stormwater runoff and flash flooding.

Thanks to the amount of rainwater that can be harvested from a roof with adequate guttering, installing a rainwater tank can help relieve some of the stress on stormwater systems.

If an unexpected weather event drops 100mm of rain in Fyshwick in just 24 hours, it would tank only 100 homes fitted with water tanks to keep 2 million litres of water from running down roads and filling storm drains.

The Fyshwick Climate

Fyshwick has an oceanic climate. In January the average high is approximately 28°C, whilst in July the average high drops to approximately 11 °C.

Frost is common in the winter months. Snow is rare in Fyshwick due to being on the eastern side of the range, but the surrounding areas get annual snowfall through winter and often the snow-capped Brindabella Range can be seen from town.

Fyshwick Historical Fact

One noteworthy portion of Fyshwick, located between the railway line and Canberra Avenue, was built as an internment camp during early 1918. It was known as the Molonglo Internment Camp, although it was also referred to as a concentration camp. The site was intended to accommodate 3,500 German and Austrian nationals being expelled from China, however once the camp had been established in May 1918 these internees were no longer destined for Molonglo.

Instead, the camp housed 150 internees transferred from the Bourke Camp in New South Wales. The camp was closed in late 1919 after the internees were deported to Germany. Most of the camp's buildings were sold off, with the remaining buildings being converted to house construction workers, some of whom were unemployed returned servicemen. It was then called Molonglo Settlement.

Gradually the camp buildings were moved to other camp sites around Canberra and the roads used to service the camp became the first streets of Fyshwick.
