Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer.
Bushfire preparation
Due to Australia's climate of long hot dry seasons, bushfires are a continuous threat, and Bundaberg is no different. Even with much of the rainfall coming in the summer months, this can result in longer grasses which easily catch alight.
Fire has long been a recognised threat in Queensland, and the Queensland Fire Service was born in 1860, and the first firefighters were employed in the state in 1889. The first fire legislation - the Act to Prevent the Careless Use of Fire 1865 - was enacted some 35 years before federation.
A significant way to plan for the drier months of the year is to ensure that you not only have a bushfire action plan but also that you have enough water storage to assist you and emergency services protect against the threat of wildfires.
A steel water tank can be used as both fire protection and water storage for the home, and Pioneer also offers a fire reserve option for your water tank if needed.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions.
A Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competition in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in partnership with the CSIRO.
All other tanks tested either melted or split, causing them to lose precious water, however, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30-minute fire front, which could prove essential to fire fighting efforts.
After a fire front has gone by, the water in your tank can still be used for non-consumptive uses, like watering your lawns, however, it is highly advised to get your water tested as soon as possible to ensure your water is safe before using it for food preparation or drinking.

Bundaberg Water Storage Challenges
Whilst rainfall is a refreshing sight throughout this dry nation of ours, changing weather conditions causing heavy storms, and modern infrastructure like asphalt and sidewalks, often results in the build-up of water and flash flooding, which can lead to damage to property and the environment.
The installation of a rainwater tank can be a great tool in assisting to prevent damaging water runoff, and support stormwater systems.
If we suppose the average roof in Bundaberg is 200m2, then in the case of a weather event that dropped 100mm of rainfall, it would only need 100 homes to have installed rainwater tanks to keep over 2 million litres of water from becoming stormwater run off.
The Bundaberg Climate
Bundaberg has a humid subtropical climate with hot, wet summers and mild, dry winters. The climate is rated the most equable of any Australian town or city and ranked 5th on a worldwide comparison.
The mean daily maximum temperature is highest in January at 30.7°C, and the mean daily minimum is lowest in July at 10.7°C. The average annual rainfall is 935.9 mm.
