Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer.

Bushfire preparation

Despite being an exquisite and green part of the state, the South West is also prone to bushfires in the hot, dry summer months, with grasses dry and susceptible to wildfires.

Among 8 trees chosen at the time, The Gloucester Tree - now an icon of the South West - was used as a fire lookout by forest rangers, before firefighters were able to use helicopters or other forms of fire detection.

As well as having a bushfire action plan, a useful way to get ready for the dry summer months is to make sure that you have adequate water storage to help protect you from the threat of fire, and a Pioneer Water Tank helps provide that security.

A steel water tank can be used as both fire protection and water storage for the home, and Pioneer also offers a fire reserve option for your water tank if needed.

Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions.

A Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competition in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in partnership with the CSIRO.

All other tanks tested either melted or split, causing them to lose precious water, however, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30-minute fire front, which could prove crucial to fire fighting efforts.

Once a fire front has passed, the water in your tank can most likely still be used for non-consumptive uses, like watering your lawns, however, it is highly advised to get your water assessed as soon as possible to ensure your water is safe before using it for food preparation or drinking.

Bridgetown Water Storage Challenges

In a country as dry as Australia, rain of any kind is often a welcome sight, however, modern infrastructure like streets and footpaths, together with changing weather conditions, can often result in flash flooding due to stormwater runoff, which can cause comprehensive damage.

Installing a rainwater tank and sufficient guttering can help relieve struggling stormwater systems from some of the rainfall, and help to decrease the chance of flash flooding.

In the event of a storm that caused 100mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, it would take just 100 homes with rainwater tanks and sufficient guttering to prevent 2 million litres of stormwater runoff from entering storm drains and roads.

The Bridgetown Climate

Bridgetown experiences a hot Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters.

Bridgetown is a green and lush area, receiving an average annual rainfall of 721.4mm, and sitting on the banks of the Blackwood River.

Until the 1980s, the land surrounding Bridgetown was almost exclusively used for broadacre agriculture and improved pasture.

The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference.

Aqualiner Fresh ® antimicrobial water tank liner.

Pioneer understands the importance of clean water, particularly when it comes to drinking water for you and your family.

Proven to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water Tanks exclusive.

The Aqualiner Fresh ® utilises Sanitized ® technology, with the antibacterial qualities of silver, interwoven into the water tank liner. This is an industry-leading product, comprised of five engineered layers, assembled to produce the most technologically advanced, cleanest and strongest water tank liner available today.

Pioneer V-Lock® tank wall profile

The Pioneer V-Lock® tank wall profile has been engineered for durability, and developed with the sole purpose of water storage in mind.

This V-Lock panel profile is designed not only for the strength and durability of the tank wall itself by engineering the sheets to the ideal thickness for each panel, but also to protect the tank liner, preventing stretching and wear as the tank fills and drains.

The design was viewed as so good, in terms of structural integrity and visual appeal, that it received an Australian Design Award.

Pioneer Water Tanks Dealer Direct Network is made up of over fifty water tank dealers across the country, meaning we can provide truly local service to all Australians.

Bridgetown Historical Fact

The area was originally known as Geegelup, which was believed to mean "place of gilgies" in the Noongar language, referring to the fresh water lobster that inhabits the area. However recent research suggests the actual meaning of Geegelup may be "place of spears".

In 1852, A.C. Gregory made the original survey of the Geegelup area and in 1857, Edward Godfrey Hester - now honoured in nearby Hester - and John Blechynden settled there. In 1861, convicts built the road from Donnybrook into the area.
