Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer.
Bushfire preparation
Australia's famed hot summer weather and year-round sunshine comes at a cost, with the nation holding the title of the driest (non-Antarctica) continent on the planet. This comes with the unwanted risk of widespread bushfires across the country.
Victorians know all too well the risks that bushfires pose, as all too often when the east coast is struck by fire, Victoria feels the brunt of it.
As well as having a bushfire action plan, an important way to prepare for the dry summer months is to ensure that you have sufficient water storage to help protect you from the threat of fire, and a Pioneer Water Tank helps provide that protection.
A steel water tank can be used as both fire protection and water storage for the home, and Pioneer also offers a fire reserve option for your water tank if needed.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions.
The CSIRO performed bushfire simulation tests on water tanks in partnership with the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC, and the results showed that a steel Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competition.
All other tanks tested either melted or split, causing them to lose valuable water, however the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30-minute fire front, which could prove crucial to fire fighting efforts.
If your water tank has been exposed to fire, it is important to make sure that you get your water tested as soon as possible to ensure that it is safe for food preparation or drinking. The water would, however, still be suitable for purposes such as watering gardens or lawns.

Bendigo Water Storage Challenges
In a nation that is known for being as dry as Australia, it is no surprise that most people take delight at the idea of rainfall, however changing weather conditions that lead to unpredictable storms, alongside modern infrastructure like roads and footpaths can bring about stormwater runoff and flash flooding.
A rainwater tank, along with adequate guttering can help prevent some of this water from entering streets and stormwater systems, helping decrease the risk of stormwater run off.
If an unexpected weather event drops 100mm of rain in Bendigo in just 24 hours, it would tank only 100 homes equipped with water tanks to keep 2 million litres of water from running down roads and filling storm drains.
Bendigo Historical Fact
The Traditional Owners of the Mount Alexander area that includes Greater Bendigo are the Dja Dja Wurrung (Djaara) people. They exploited the rich local hunting grounds from which they were displaced by the arrival by white settlers, who established the first of many vast sheep runs in 1837.
Gold was officially discovered in the area in October 1851, just after the other significant goldfields in neighbouring Castlemaine, from where many diggers migrated, bringing the total population to 40,000 in less than a year. Many of these diggers were Chinese and their descendants still live in the region.
