The ACT is often seen from the outside as rainy and cold with plentiful rainfall, however, people who reside in the ACT know better, and keep their water supply requirements in mind.

Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer.

Bushfire preparation

Despite being a wintry and leafy part of the country, the ACT is also prone to bushfires in the hot, dry summer months, as the area receives much less rainfall than most people think, leaving plant life dry and susceptible to wildfires

Smoke haze became synonymous with the 2019/2020 Australian summer, and on 1 January 2020, Canberra had the worst air quality of any major city in the world, as fires both in and outside of the territory caused widespread damage.

It is important in any country setting to ensure that you are doing the best you can to protect yourself from bushfire. You can do this by ensuring that you have a bushfire action plan, as well as adequate water storage for fire fighting purposes.

In order to ensure your water tank can be used for the functions of both household or property water storage, and fire protection, Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve.

Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions.

When the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in conjunction with the CSIRO performed bushfire simulations on a range of water tanks, a steel Pioneer Water Tank held up best.

After 30 minutes of submersion in flame, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water, an important feature for firefighting efforts, while the other tanks tested either melted or split, causing their water to be partially or fully lost.

After a fire front has gone by, the water in your tank can still be used for non-consumptive purposes, like irrigating your yard, however, it is highly advised to get your water tested as soon as possible to make certain your water is safe before using it for food preparation or drinking.

Belconnen Water Storage Challenges

In a nation that is known for being as dry as Australia, it is no surprise that most people take delight at the idea of rainfall, however changing weather conditions that lead to unpredictable storms, paired with modern infrastructure like roads and footpaths can result in stormwater runoff and flash flooding.

A rainwater tank, coupled with appropriate guttering can help prevent some of this water from entering streets and stormwater systems, helping decrease the risk of stormwater run off.

If we suppose the average roof in Belconnen is 200m2, then in the case of a weather event that dropped 100mm of rainfall, it would only need 100 homes to have installed water tanks to keep over 2 million litres of water from becoming stormwater run off.

The Belconnen Climate

Belconnen has an oceanic climate. In January the average high is approximately 28°C, whilst in July the average high drops to approximately 11 °C.

Frost is common in the winter months. Snow is rare in Belconnen due to being on the eastern side of the range, but the surrounding areas get annual snowfall through winter and often the snow-capped Brindabella Range can be seen from town.

Belconnen Historical Fact

Belconnen was previously occupied by Ginninderra, the former agricultural lands that corresponds with the watershed of Ginninderra Creek. The Belconnen district is named after one of the earliest land grants made in the district during colonial times. Belconnen a land grant totalling 800 hectares was made to explorer Charles Sturt who eventually sold the property to Robert Campbell who owned the nearby Duntroon Estate.

The District of Belconnen is one of the original eighteen districts of the Australian Capital Territory, used in land administration. The district is subdivided into 27 suburbs, sections and blocks. The district of Belconnen is largely composed of Canberra suburbs.
