Barraba Water Tanks

Barraba is a town in the New England region of northern New South Wales. It was formerly the centre of Barraba Shire local government area, but most of this, including Barraba, was absorbed into Tamworth Regional Council.

It is part of the Bundarra-Barraba Important Bird Area which is important for the conservation of the endangered regent honeyeater. For over 30 years, Pioneer Water Tanks have been a highly regarded Barraba water tank manufacturer and supplier.

Like much of the rest of this dry nation of ours, people of New South Wales recognize the importance of high quality water storage solutions, and there remains no better than a rain water tank.

Every Pioneer Water tank that gets installed has the backing of over 30 years of Australian innovation and water harvesting know-how.

Barraba Water Storage Challenges

While many people across our dry country revel in the sight of rain, changing climate conditions, and modern infrastructure have led to increasing cases of storm water run off and flash flooding.

Installing a rain water tank and adequate guttering can help alleviate struggling stormwater systems from some of the rainfall, and assisting to decrease the risk of flash flooding.

If we suppose the typical roof in Barraba is 200m2, then in the case of a weather event that dropped 100mm of rainfall, it would only need one hundred homes to have installed water tanks to keep over 2 million litres of water from becoming stormwater run off.

Bushfire e-book

Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions.

Sadly the long warm summers in Barraba leave it, like much of Australia, prone to widespread bushfires. Despite the fact that much of Barraba's rainfall falls in the summer months, this can lead to lush grasses that can easily burn on the warmer days.

A Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competition in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in partnership with the CSIRO.

After thirty minutes of submersion in flame, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water, a critical feature for firefighting efforts, while the other tanks tested either melted or split, causing their water to be partially or fully lost.

After a fire front has passed, the water in your tank can continue to be used for non-consumptive purposes, like irrigating your gardens, however, it is highly recommended to get your water tested as soon as possible to ensure your water is safe before using it for food preparation or drinking.

The Barraba Climate

The weather station at Barraba Post Office was opened firstly as a rain reporting station in March 1881.

Barraba has a humid subtropical climate with temperatures regularly rising above 40°C in summer and dropping below 0°C in winter, being one of the few Australian towns to experience temperature variations like this.

Its average annual rainfall is 688.7 mm, which is spread throughout the year, however severe thunderstorms in the summer months often cause heavy downpours which boost rainfall totals.

Barraba Historical Fact

The Kamilaroi people lived and occupied the Barraba region prior to European settlement. The first white man in area was the explorer and botanist, Allan Cunningham, in 1827.

At the same time, he discovered the Manilla River, which he named Buddle's Creek. A land holding named Barraba Station was taken up around 1837 or 1838. In July 1852, the Assistant Surveyor, J. T. Gorman mapped the future townsite.
