Water Storage for Mike’s New Home

THE PROBLEM

Mike and his partner are just about to finish building a new home on two acres of land near Jamison, Victoria. They started planning the build back in 2017, and it’s safe to say it’s not your average home.

They’re building a high-performance home, also known as a ‘passive home’, which is an air-tight house designed to be as energy efficient as possible.

Mike explains it’s a German-method of building homes that uses an exact science on how to build, often using the sun, trees, location and direction to help control the temperature of the house.

“We’ve spent a lot of time and money researching to build a high-performance home. It’s not a standard project – the house has a thermal envelope around it,” explains Mike.

“If you can determine before you build the house how much it’s going to cost you to heat the house, you have to build it to a very high standard to achieve that prediction.

“The idea of building this type of home is not only to be self-sustainable and energy efficient, but also to reduce costs for us later down the track.

“What our goal is to try and reduce the amount of energy we need to keep this house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.”

In the planning stage of the high-performance home, Mike recognised they’ll need a secure water storage facility on-site.

PIONEER’S SOLUTION

Mike did his research and contacted Quentin White & Co Tanks & Plumbing via the Pioneer Water Tanks website.

They settled on a GT120 (120,000L) which has now been installed on the west side of the house to block the sun from penetrating the walls of the home.

“Because the tank is located on the west side of the house, we’re using that volume of water to insulate the sun from heating that side of the house.”

The entire experience of working with Quentin and Katrina was excellent. If I had any questions, they would answer by email immediately. They picked up the phone when needed and they listened to our goals for the house.

Husband and wife duo, Quentin and Katrina, installed the tank themselves – an aspect of the family business that Mike was overly impressed with.

“The entire experience of working with Quentin and Katrina was excellent. If I had any questions, they would answer by email immediately. They picked up the phone when needed and they listened to our goals for the house.

“What was important for me was where the outlet on the tank was located and the level indicator was in a place we could use.

“The water outlet locations are so we can line up with the existing plumbing and power that’s there to pump the water to the other CFA outlets on the other side which would be useful for the CFA to get to.”

Mike says having a CFA outlet was important to him due to the proximity of how close the tank is to the house.

“We’re surrounded by gumtrees, so we made sure a fire truck could easily get on-site and connect to the tank if needed,” he says.

“It’s just a plan on conceivable events that will hopefully never happen, but you need to be prepared and anticipate those events.”

Mike and his partner’s high-performance home build is a refreshing and exciting way to be self-sustainable and energy efficient. Pioneer is proud to have provided their water storage for household use so they can achieve their incredible goals!
