Rainwater Tanks for Rural Homes
Rainwater storage on your property
Rural homes and rainwater tanks
For many rural homes across Australia, rainwater tanks are a vital piece of infrastructure, as for many Australian families access to scheme water or mains water supply is unavailable, and any bore water or dam water may be unsafe to drink.
Rainwater harvesting utilising the gutters on the roof of your home or shed can typically catch more than enough water to service your home, and ensure that you are able to meet all of your household's water storage needs without the water bills that come with carting water to the home.
Some people may be hesitant about how safe rainwater is for drinking water, but for people living on a rural or semi-rural property - provided that the rainwater is clear and clean, has little taste or smell, and your rainwater harvesting system is clean and well maintained - it is unlikely to cause any harm or illness, something that is backed up by state and federal government documents on rainwater tanks.
What can contaminate my stored rainwater
- Bird and other small animal droppings
- Other debris including dead animals and insects containing microscopic organisms
- Air pollution from any nearby industrial emissions or heavy road traffic
- Dust whipped up by industrial or agricultural activities
- Pesticide spray drift
- Smoke from bushfires, engines or wood heaters
- Storing the rainwater in a water tank or pipes which are not clean
How do I protect my water supply from contamination
Regular maintenance of the whole system, from roof to tank to tap, is the key to good water quality for your home.
- Keep all gutters and pipes clear of leaf litter and debris
- Remove any branches, TV antennas or other perches for birds
- Ensure the inlet and overflow of your rainwater tank are covered with mesh
- Ensure your inlet and leaf filter basked has the lid fitted to prevent sunlight from reaching the water
- Utilise a first flush diverter or similar after any dry spell to rinse off dirt and dust from rainwater harvesting areas
- Ensure that guttering and pipework is self-draining, or fitted with drainage points to prevent corrosion and contamination by metal.
What tank size will be best for my home?
Most rural Australians who are installing a rainwater tank are looking to use their water storage for the water supply of their entire home, as opposed to those in urban areas who may be using rainwater collection to avoid water restrictions, or offset their washing machine or garden water usage.
For a rainwater tank that is the sole water supply of a home, a smaller tank than required can result in costly water cartage, or running out of water at inopportune moments.
The best rainwater tank size for your home is dependent on your annual rainfall, harvesting ability, and the number of people who live in your home, however Pioneer Water Tanks recommends the following:
- 1 - 2 people: GT 90 (92,570 litres)
- 3 people: GT 110 (110,166 litres)
- 4 people: GT 150 (149,948 litres)
- 5 - 6 people: GT 250 (247,874 litres)
