What are Poly Water Tanks?

Plastic Tank Banner

Poly Water Tanks, or Polyethylene Water Tanks, are constructed from a lightweight, low cost, versatile plastic, which is free from BPA. Polyethylene is the most widely used plastic in the world, and is considered one of the safest forms of plastic.

More than just a plastic tank, poly water tanks come in a range of sizes, from the small slimline garden tanks, starting as small as 1000 litres, up to the larger rural 50 000 litre tank. Poly water tanks are suitable for most household potable water needs, being UV resistant, meeting industry standards for drinking water, and constructed from plastics that are designed to keep water free of contamination.

What is Polyethylene?

Polyethylene is the most commonly produced plastic on earth, with over 100 million tonnes being produced annually, accounting for more than a third of all plastics. The popularity of Polyethylene is in part due to its safe interaction with food and drinking water, and is commonly used in bottles, pipes and other plastic packagings.

Polyethylene can be produced in a variety of densities, which are determined by its intended usage, which can range from hip and knee replacements, to plastic bags and cling-wrap, to any variety of accessories to every day life.

Rainwater Tanks and the Australian Household

Rainwater tanks, and in particular poly water tanks and accessories, are becoming increasingly common in Australia, in both urban and rural households. Some shires and councils even require new homes to be built with a rainwater tank to at least offset toilet and laundry water usage to help alleviate the stress on mains water storage.

With much of Australia in drought conditions, and ever increasing restrictions on our water use, both urban and rural, a rainwater tank is becoming not only a viable alternative from mains water, but for some a requirement to meet their family’s water needs.

Round Water Tanks

round rainwater tank

If you have the available space, a round water tank is a great way to conserve water, and to cut back on your reliance on Mains Water usage. Round Tanks are available in a variety of heights and diameters, to better suit your available space, and can hold up to 50kL of water in the larger rural tanks, or up to 10kL of water in the smaller urban tanks.

Installing a water tank can help supplement some of your regular water consumption, cutting costs, and helping ease the growing demands on Australia’s water supply.

A high quality poly tank should also come with a long term warranty, ensuring you and your family premium rainwater storage solutions well into the future.

Slimline Water Tanks

If you don’t have enough available space for a round water tank, a slimline rainwater tank may be the way to go for your water storage needs. Slimline water tanks are named after their slim profile, designed to fit down the side of a house where limited space is available. Most slimline tanks are very slim, coming in well under a metre in width, but still support over 2000L of water storage.  Slimline water tanks come in a variety of colours, can be placed directly onto pavers, and are easily relocatable if the need arises.

Another benefit of slimline water tanks is that they are typically quite well priced, (ranging from $700 to $200) giving you the freedom to do a few more loads of washing, or water the gardens outside of mains watering hours, without too much of a burden on your pocket – and may even end up saving you not only water, but money in the long run.

Why Choose a Poly Rainwater Tank?

Poly rainwater tanks are the most popular type of water tank on the market today, due to their lightweight material, affordable cost and easy installation. But these aren’t the only benefits of a poly water tank. Unlike steel or concrete water tanks, poly water storage tanks don’t require a plastic lining, as they are already made from a water safe poly compound which won’t corrode, rust, or leak chemicals into your water storage.

As they are one solid UV protected material, poly water tanks prevent algae growth, due to not allowing light in to the tank. This means that your drinking water will stay cool and fresh all year round, and thanks being delivered in one piece and polyethylene being fully recyclable, it is easy to recycle your poly water tank, and replace it with a new one at the end of its service life - which for poly water tanks can be up to 35 years!

Another major benefit, especially for urban installations, is size, with round water tanks available with diameters as small as 80cm, and slimline tanks with some available in widths of only 70cm. But if capacity is needed for a rural tank, and you have the available space, larger round tanks are available with the 4.4m diameter 50kL tanks capable of much higher capacity water storage. Delivery and installation of a Poly water tank is typically much easier than that of a concrete or steel tank, with the tank being delivered prefabricated on the back of a truck.
