Bernie Henderson from Buckleboo, SA
Bernie and his wife Nicole live on just under 3000 hectares of land in Buckleboo, a small South Australian town northwest of Kimba on the Eyre Peninsula.
The sheep and crop farmer sees an average of 30mm of rain per month.
Bernie faced a common problem: his existing tanks were no longer meeting the water needs of his growing enterprise.
In addition to this, he questioned the reliability of his ancient cement tanks: “I didn’t even know how old they were!” he says.
“To buy a cement tank in this day and age is going backwards.”
What he really wanted was a modern solution that wouldn’t break the bank.
To complicate things, Bernie also required a tank that could accommodate a 3-inch outlet around a foot from the bottom, to easily attach spraying equipment.
With a few respected neighbours putting up good-looking steel tanks, Bernie finally decided to call his local Pioneer Water Tanks Accredited Dealer to enquire about getting one for himself.
While there’s not much ‘local’ to the small farming community of Buckleboo, Bernie got in touch with Eyre Tank Makers—a Pioneer Water Tank Dealership based out of Port Lincoln.
The team are the Eyre Peninsula tank experts, and soon convinced Bernie that a Pioneer Water Tank would be his best bet.
He purchased two 108,000 L tanks which, despite the relative distance, were installed “in no time”.
“The reason I chose Pioneer was simply because of the value for money,” Bernie says.
“The tanks keep the water nice and cold, just what the stock want. And we have some pretty harsh days out here — it often gets up over 40 degrees.”
“Plus, they just look nice… especially alongside the old cement ones!”
As for the 3-inch outlet Bernie required, he says the team were happy to comply.
“They did everything I said, and I haven’t had any problems.”
Bernie doesn’t see the tanks as a short-term solution, but rather a long-term investment into improving infrastructure on the farm.
In fact, he’s already planning his next Pioneer purchase.
“I’m just in the process of putting up a shed, and—ideally—I’d like to install another one of these 108,000L tanks to collect water off the roof.”
Bernie made a smart decision in contacting an expert for advice on his unique situation.
