Being Self Sustaining with Jamie Adamson

Jamie Adamson from Taggerty, Victoria

THE PROBLEM

Jamie and his family live on a 150-acre property in Taggerty, Victoria at the base of the majestic Cathedral Ranges. They acquired the property four years ago, and at that time the water supply was sourced from a local river and delivered via a 2km aging pipeline.

“When we purchased the property, I was reasonably keen to get off that pipe because it was over 50 years old and regularly developed major underground leaks that I had to first find and then fix,” reflects Jamie.

The family decided to move to a rainwater tank, and with an extensive roof area across two houses and two sheds, Jamie says it made sense to utilise that large catchment.

THE SOLUTION

Jamie says they were looking for something that would work aesthetically and came with a recognised trusted product – that product was BlueScope Steel.

“That steel is a big part of the reason why we went with Pioneer Water Tanks,” he says.

“The COLORBOND® colours also matched up perfectly with the house – which we had recently painted Woodland Grey. We chose this colour as we wanted the house to blend seamlessly into the beautiful natural rural environment of the Cathedral Ranges.  We were thrilled to then be able to add a tank in the exact same colour without any need to repaint.”

Jamie contacted the Pioneer HQ who put him in touch with his local dealer, Quentin White & Co Tanks & Plumbing.

“Initially we went for the 60,000L tank – we thought that was going to be enough.”

That was a few years ago, and in the last 6 months they’ve done a lot of landscaping work and planted many new trees together with new garden beds and 550 square metres of turf.

It just made sense given the experiences in the first installation that we got the same tank and went with the same installer.

“As part of that we installed a rather expensive irrigation system to see us through the long summers.

“I think we probably could have just gotten away with the existing tank on its own, but to make sure that we’re always going to have enough water for the gardens we chose to put in another GT60 right next to the existing one.

It just made sense given the experiences in the first installation that we got the same tank and went with the same installer. The Whites were absolutely fantastic the first time and I didn’t have any problems reaching out to Katrina for the second tank. We’ve interconnected them so they now effectively behave as a single tank.”

Jamie says the long-life warranty of Pioneer’s tanks was something very important to him.

“These are big capital items and you’re not looking to replace them anytime soon – it gives you a lot of comfort knowing you’re covered.

“In saying that, the tanks are incredibly solid and stable!”

What was Jamie’s experience with the Pioneer team and the staff at Quentin White?

“The installation team was really good – they were great communicators and really helpful.

I appreciated the Pioneer instruction sheet, which was a simple one-pager that spelled out how big the pad size had to be, the way it should be constructed to meet the warranty conditions of the tank, and other general information. Putting in a tank isn’t something we do every day, so to have clear instructions made life easy for us to prepare for the installers.

Quentin White went above and beyond – he suggested I put the sand down 1-3 days prior to the installation in case heavy rain came which would wash away the sand.  Sure enough we got a lot of rain in the days leading up to the installation, so I was relieved that I had this information and we didn’t level the pad too early!

Quentin is a lovely fellow to deal with – he’s very happy to take the time to explain what he’s doing and how it comes together.”

Jamie also has 40 black angus cattle on the property, and while they have their own bore-supplied water, he appreciates the security of knowing he has the extra water storage on hand if needed.
